POSITION SUMMARY

Supports the safety and successful operations at the Astoria Aquatic Center, by promoting water safety, enforcing rules, monitoring patrons, maintaining vigilance, providing first aid, and preventing and responding to emergencies.

SCHEDULE

Lifeguards are currently most needed for Monday - Friday 5:30AM-1:00PM & 3:30PM - 7:30PM and weekends 9:30AM - 3:30PM. This is a part-time position with variable hours depending on the Astoria Aquatic Center hours of operation and events. Part-time positions with the City are limited to working no more than 129 hours per month.

Interviews will be held on an ongoing basis

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Ensures the safety of patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Aquatic Center Supervisor and in coordination with the Aquatics Coordinator and Head Lifeguards.
  • Maintains constant vigilance of the patrons in the facility through proactive scanning patterns.
  • Acts immediately and appropriately to secure the safety of patrons in the event of an emergency.
  • Provides emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services.
  • Presents a professional appearance and attitude at all times and maintains a high standard of customer service.
  • Enforces facility rules.
  • Completes required in-service trainings as required by certifying agency and Parks and Recreation Department.
  • Respectfully takes direction from the supervisor.
  • Demonstrates understanding of and adheres to all safety regulations and practices.
  • Supports facility cleaning tasks including but not limited to; sweeping, mopping, and sanitizing floors, wiping down and sanitizing surfaces, taking out the garbage, picking up debris, cleaning restrooms, laundering hand towels and lost and found items, etc.
  • Displays excellent communication skills required in working with coworkers and the public, including the ability to communicate effectively and remain calm and courteous under pressure.
  • Maintains predictable attendance by providing availability information in advance and adheres to published and set schedule provided by supervisor.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABLITIES

  • Basic understanding of lifeguarding techniques and protocols.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment with a spirit of cooperation.
  • Possesses advanced knowledge of the facility's emergency action plan and understands the role their position facilitates in an emergency.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Must be 16 years or older.
  2. Possession of or ability to pass an Ellis and Associates International Lifeguard Training Certification, including CPR & First Aid certification.
  3. Ability to physically perform all skills required of a lifeguard.
  4. Ability to pass a City background check including checks of Criminal, Social Security Trace and Sex Offender Registry records.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Experience lifeguarding or working in water-safety settings.
  2. Experience working with children and young adults.
  3. Competitive swimming experience.
  4. Experience teaching swim lessons and competitive swim techniques.
  5. Current or expired Lifeguard Certification from nationally recognized agency (Ellis, Red Cross). Note: Candidates with current lifeguard certifications from other certifying agencies (such as Red Cross, YMCA, etc.) will have 60 days from the date of hire to complete the Ellis and Associates International Lifeguard Training Certification.
WORK ENVIRONMENT

Employees must be able to physically perform all duties of the lifeguard role which includes standing, sitting, walking, lifting, reaching, bending, climbing, balancing, kneeling and crouching. Occasionally lifting and moving up to 50 pounds is required and includes the ability to assist conscious and unconscious patrons in distress out of the water and on the deck including use of a backboard.

Employees are required to communicate verbally, follow instructions and protocols and hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility or in the facility. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Employees must remain alert and vigilant with the ability to see and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility requiring close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus to keep an effective scan pattern and keep a visual of the entire bottom of the pool and assigned zone.

While performing the duties of this position, employees are regularly exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather) and fumes or airborne particles (Chlorine).
