Job Title: Special Education/Transition Room Teacher Assistant

Location: Denton TX

Job Type: Full-Time

Compensation: $20.00/hour

Company: Koan School

Hours: Monday – Friday: 8:00 AM – 3:45 PM

Our mission is to provide a low-cost alternative for private education while keeping class sizes small enough to accommodate the diverse interests and skills of young learners in our community. We are committed to providing high-quality education and support to neurodivergent students with elevated social-emotional, behavioral, and learning needs.

This elevated needs classroom is specifically for neurodivergent learners who need more individualized support and smaller teacher to student ratio, who are aged 8-12. The goals of this program include teaching classroom skills, coping with new environments, hands-on progressive learning, and bringing our friends and family into the community. Students in this classroom may be coming from private therapy, homeschooling, or other intensive educational and behavioral programming who are seeking to gain the skills and knowledge to transition into broader educational and community contexts.

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Special Education Transition Room Teacher to join our team. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in bridging the gap between home and school for our neurodivergent students with disabilities (social, emotional, learning, physical, intellectual).

Working collaboratively with families, general education teachers, administrators, and other staff to ensure individualized education plans are developed and implemented effectively.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with campus administration to review general education and special education records.
  • Ensure the appropriate placement and development of behavior plans for students with disabilities.
  • Write and implement a student behavior plan in a timely manner.
  • Work with general education teachers and administrators to provide special education accommodations and services.
  • Continuously evaluate student progress and use findings to improve special education services.
  • Ensure compliance with accreditation requirements.
  • Assist with Response-To-Intervention and other applicable processes.
  • Develop and implement transition plans for students with elevated support needs.
  • Facilitate communication and collaboration with all staff.
  • Assist in acquiring contracted service providers as needed.
  • Contribute to continuous curriculum renewal to address student needs.
  • Maintain open lines of communication with parents, students, teachers, and administrators.
  • Recommend policies to improve programming.
  • Compile and maintain all necessary reports, records, and documents.
  • Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university, preferably in Special Education or Behavior Analysis or similar field.
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate in Special Education, or relevant experience in special education/neurodivergent education (preferred).
  • Ability to work effectively with students, especially those with disabilities (social, emotional, learning, physical, intellectual).
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in computer skills to implement various programs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate using and supporting multi-modalities of communication (verbal/non-verbal, spoken, written, low-tech aac, high tech aac)
  • Ability to learn and implement teaching curriculum software programs.
  • Effective communication and collaboration with supervisors.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Capability to effectively engage with students having diverse communication and behavioral challenges, such as sensory processing differences, social communication challenges, restricted and repetitive behaviors, inattention and hyperactivity, impulsivity and executive functioning. and emotional regulation challenges encompassing issues like aggression, aggressive language verbal refusals, and other problem behaviors commonly associated with autism and other neurodivergent diagnoses, while maintaining a comprehensive understanding of their elevated needs.
