Posting Details The OSI enforces New Mexico law on insurance matters, including consumer protections, review of insurance forms and rates for accuracy and fairness, and helps New Mexicans address insurance concerns. We oversee and regulate most kinds of insurance in New Mexico and we license the individuals and agencies that sell insurance in the state.

Post of duty for this position may be in Santa Fe or Albuquerque.
Why does the job exist? The purpose of the position is to provide professional investigative work and civil enforcement of violations of the Insurance
Code, rules and regulations. Investigate civil complaints and inquiries for possible infractions of the Insurance Code which are received by the agency from the public, insurance industry, NAIC, and other government agencies. Work closely with OSI legal staff to ensure that bad actors in the New Mexico insurance industry are held accountable for their violations of the Insurance Code.
How does it get done? Responsible for providing professional investigative work and civil enforcement of violations of the Insurance Code. The State Investigator may testify in civil proceedings, may be deposed and may be subpoenaed for court hearings. The position provides analysis of relevant regulations and law while evaluating the facts, issues, and case specific circumstances of the inquires and enforcement matters presented. Ensures cases are investigated thoroughly and that all supporting evidence is compiled and organized in a manner that assists OSI legal staff to develop a winnable case. Coordinates with supervisor and other bureaus as necessary to facilitate the work of the Civil Investigative Bureau. All case information and documentation is input and stored in our database (SBS) in a thorough and organized manner. Compiles and maintains case specific data in a structured and detailed manner for regular meetings. Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Who are the customers? The Civil Investigations Bureau protects New Mexico constituents by investigating civil complaints against those involved in the insurance industry for possible statutory infractions.
Ideal Candidate Knowledge and a background in the insurance industry. Experience in conducting interviews, testifying in court and in administrative hearings. Ability to analyze and interpret New Mexico law and insurance industry documentation. Proficiency in technical writing and the capacity to put facts together in a constructive manner. Ability to work independently and communicate effectively with team members. Organizational and case management skills with the ability to problem solve.
Minimum Qualification Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, Public Administration, Criminology, or other related field, with two (2) years of experience in accounting, auditing, and investigation, or insurance adjusting and investigating or investigative report writing. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Employment Requirements Must possess a valid New Mexico Drive's license, a current defensive driving course certification from the State of New Mexico or must pass Defensive Driving Course Certificate within six months of the date of hire as a condition of continued employment
Working Conditions Work is performed in an office setting with extensive exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT), personal computer, laptop, printer, calculator, hole-punch, cellphone, copy machine, scanner, keyboard and telephone usage. Some standing, bending and reaching may be required. Travel and field work may be required and must have a valid driver's license and be able to lift 25 lbs.
