Job Summary :
The CASAC Counselor is responsible for providing counseling services to individuals struggling with substance use disorders. The counselor will develop and implement individualized treatment plans, facilitate group and individual counseling sessions, and provide clients with support, resources, and education to aid in their recovery process. The ideal candidate should have a strong understanding of addiction, recovery, and co-occurring disorders, and possess excellent communication, empathy, and problem-solving skills.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Client Assessment : Conduct comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments to evaluate the severity of clients’ substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health issues.
  • Individualized Treatment Plans : Develop, implement, and monitor individualized treatment plans tailored to each client's needs and recovery goals, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Counseling Services : Provide individual, group, and family counseling to clients, using evidence-based therapeutic techniques.
  • Group Facilitation : Facilitate psychoeducational and therapeutic groups focused on relapse prevention, coping skills, anger management, and other relevant topics.
  • Crisis Intervention : Provide immediate support during crises, using appropriate de-escalation techniques and referral services.
  • Case Management : Coordinate care with other health and social service providers to ensure a holistic approach to recovery; make appropriate referrals for services such as housing, employment, and medical care.
  • Documentation : Maintain accurate and timely documentation of all client interactions, progress notes, treatment plans, and discharge summaries, in accordance with agency policies and state regulations.
  • Compliance : Ensure compliance with all state and federal regulations, including confidentiality (HIPAA), and maintain professional ethics in all interactions.
  • Client Advocacy : Act as an advocate for clients, ensuring they receive necessary services and support throughout their treatment journey.
  • Education and Prevention : Provide education to clients, families, and community members about substance use disorders, recovery, and available resources.
  • Continuous Learning : Stay up-to-date with best practices in substance abuse counseling, and participate in continuing education to maintain CASAC certification.

Qualifications :

  • CASAC Certification : Must possess a current, valid CASAC certification from New York State.
  • Education : Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience will be considered.
  • Experience : Minimum of 2 years of experience providing substance use counseling or related services.
  • Knowledge : Strong understanding of substance use disorders, recovery models, and co-occurring mental health disorders.
  • Skills :
    • Excellent communication and active listening skills.
    • Empathy, patience, and the ability to build trust with clients.
    • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
    • Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Cultural Competence : Ability to work with clients from diverse backgrounds and demonstrate cultural sensitivity.
  • Computer Proficiency : Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
